The Best Window Treatments for Large Windows

buying guidelarge windowsHunter Douglas

Big windows are the best thing about a lot of homes. Floor-to-ceiling glass in a living room. A wall of windows overlooking the backyard. A picture window that floods the kitchen with morning light. They're stunning.

They're also a real challenge to cover. Standard blinds don't fit. Cheap options sag, buckle, or look flimsy stretched across a wide span. And if the window is high up or hard to reach, you've got an operational headache on top of everything else.

We work with large windows constantly, and certain products just perform better at scale. Here are the options we recommend most.

Silhouette Window Shadings

If you love natural light but need privacy and UV protection, Silhouette shadings are hard to beat. They have soft fabric vanes suspended between two sheer panels, so you get this beautiful diffused light that fills the room without harsh glare. Think of them as the middle ground between blinds and curtains.

For large windows, Silhouettes work really well because the sheer fabric creates a clean, unified look across wide expanses. They don't have the visual clutter that horizontal blinds create on big windows. And they block up to 88% of UV rays even in the open position.

Luminette Privacy Sheers

Luminette is basically the vertical cousin of Silhouette, and it's purpose-built for wide window expanses and sliding glass doors. The sheer fabric panels rotate to control light and privacy, and they traverse side to side like drapes.

We recommend Luminette a lot for great rooms, sunrooms, and any space where you've got a run of windows or doors spanning 8 feet or more. They handle those wide openings gracefully, and they look great. If you have a sliding glass door that currently has vertical blinds from the builder, Luminette is the upgrade that will make you wonder why you waited.

Duette Honeycomb Shades

Large windows are beautiful, but they're also the biggest source of energy loss in your home. All that glass lets heat escape in winter and pour in during summer. Duette honeycomb shades solve this with their cellular construction. Each honeycomb cell traps air, creating an insulating barrier between your room and the window.

For large windows, the Duette Architella line is worth looking at. It has a cell-within-a-cell design that nearly doubles the insulating value. If you've got a big south-facing window that turns your living room into a greenhouse every afternoon, this is your fix. Available in hundreds of fabrics and colors, and they can be made up to 144 inches wide.

Plantation Shutters

Shutters are the classic choice for large windows, and for good reason. They're structural. They look built-in, like they belong to the architecture of the house rather than being an afterthought. On a tall window, a set of well-crafted plantation shutters makes a statement.

Hunter Douglas NewStyle hybrid shutters combine the beauty of real wood with the durability of modern materials, so they won't warp, crack, or fade. For large windows, we typically install them in multiple panels that fold open, giving you full access to the glass when you want it. They also add real resale value to your home, which is a nice bonus.

Motorization Changes Everything

Here's a practical reality about large windows: they're often high up, hard to reach, or just physically demanding to operate by hand. A 10-foot-wide shade is heavy. Nobody wants to walk around the couch twice a day to raise and lower blinds on a window wall.

That's why we almost always recommend Hunter Douglas PowerView motorization for large window installations. You control everything from your phone, a remote, or voice commands through Alexa, Google, or Siri. Set schedules so your shades lower automatically when the afternoon sun hits. Raise them all with a single tap when you wake up. For large windows, motorization isn't a luxury. It's what makes the whole system actually usable.

Find the Right Fit for Your Windows

Every large window is different. The direction it faces, the room it's in, how much privacy you need, your budget. The best way to figure out what works is to see these products in your actual space, on your actual windows, in your actual light.

We bring everything to you. Book a free in-home consultation, and we'll show you samples, take precise measurements, and walk you through all the options. You'll know exactly what you're getting before we order anything.
